Abstract: Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio systems have special requirements on the antennas. First, antenna parameters are defined to evaluate the performance of these antennas. Then, the formulation of time-domain integral equation (TDIE) method for electromagnetic analysis of thin wire structures and its moment method solution are given in a compact form. The formulation can deal with multiple wires, wire junctions, and wires with loads. The basic characteristics of the transient response of wire antennas are investigated. Next, the performance of dipoles and loop antennas with and without loads is evaluated for the UWB radio systems. For loop antennas, an absorbing load is introduced to minimize the ringing at the later time of the transient response. Last, the application of genetic algorithm (GA) to the optimization of UWB antenna design based on the TDIE method is described. Modeling methods and numerical examples are given.
