ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | In optical fiber communication system, optical isolators in the 1550 nm band are needed to eliminate the influence of reflected light. Faraday rotators in optical isolators consist of magneto-optical (MO) garnet crystals. This thesis was to explore the contributions from Ho3+, Yb3+, Tb3+, Bi3+ and Ce3+ ions in garnet crystals to the Faraday rotation (FR). A series of new MO crystals were prepared and their stability of Faraday rotation against wavelength and temperature in the communication band were thoroughly studied.
