Abstract: In optical fiber communication system, optical isolators in the 1550 nm band are needed to eliminate the influence of reflected light. Faraday rotators in optical isolators consist of magneto-optical (MO) garnet crystals. This thesis was to explore the contributions from Ho3+, Yb3+, Tb3+, Bi3+ and Ce3+ ions in garnet crystals to the Faraday rotation (FR). A series of new MO crystals were prepared and their stability of Faraday rotation against wavelength and temperature in the communication band were thoroughly studied. The theoretical calculation for FR in the 1550 nm band was also established for the first time.
