Abstract: This thesis presents a systematic study on the strength of flexural and tensile joints with loop connections. Experimental investigations of test specimens with insitu joints as well as monolithic specimens, reinforced either with one to one horizontal or two to one vertical loop connections, were carried out. The thirty-six specimens tested were subjected to static flexural loading. Empirical expressions to compute the tensile strength, ultimate tensile loads and moment capacities of such joints with loop connections are proposed, taking into account the compressive strength of concrete in the joint and loop connection parameters. Comparisons studies are carried out on specimens with loop connections to ascertain the accuracy of the proposed relations. Approaches used to estimate strength include strut-and-tie method, empirical coefficients, anchorage bond strength, stress developed in the steel at the critical section, linear elastic fracture mechanics and finite element modelling.
