Abstract: This research posits the role of the Project Manager (PM) as a champion of innovation and examines the effectiveness of the PMa??s role using the survey data collected from 32 construction projects in Singapore. The research also explores the influence of individual and situational variables in the PM's championing behaviour and the level of innovation on a project site. The study suggests that the PMa??s multi-faceted role in championing construction innovation has a significant impact in achieving project goals and objectives and in order to increase the innovative practices on site. Moreover, such a role should be complemented by PM's competency, professionalism, autonomy and decision authority and influence tactics, and by providing an adequate resources and organizational support. This study suggests that construction organizations should foster innovation on projects by creating a proper organizational environment or culture, and by facilitating the role of the PM as a champion of innovation.
