Abstract: This study discusses the physical limitations and capabilities of Singaporean elderly pertaining embarkation and disembarkation from bus shelter to bus and vice versa. From an ergonomic perspective, covert observations, followed by evaluative surveys and time studies were undertaken to collect data. Data collection comprised of 199 passengersa?? performances recordings in real life situations (Specimen Record) and 49 completed surveys (Structured Interview). In terms of data analysis, comparisons were made, using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science), to understand differences and similarities in user behavior influenced by age, gender diversity, different modes of using the handrails and various widths between first step and kerb. This has been complemented with a computer aided ergonomic simulation program to analyze static and dynamic postures while embarking and disembarking. Results indicated that there are significant differences in performance between people without and with physical limitations such as elderly. Determining factors are gap between first step and kerb, steps, handrails and width of the bus entrance / exit.
