Abstract: This study designed and tested a model for building partnering relationship based on trust-related features. The model considers four distinct relational forms that exist during the construction process: shallow dependence, deep dependence, shallow interdependence, and deep interdependence. In various types of relational forms, the model identifies different risks which are inherent in certain relationships in partnering context. The model also considers critical trust-fostering tools which are required for building trusts and securing successful partnering. The research design to test the model was based on an industry-wide questionnaire survey and a case study. Data were collected by postal surveys of clients, consulting and main contracting firms in Singapore and China, and face-to-face interviews on two individual projects in China involving local and foreign parties. The results show that the model accurately reflects the trust and relationship issues in construction partnering and provides a practical aid for firms to initiate construction partnering.
