Abstract: Aspect reflects human’s understanding for time process structure of affairs. In Chinese dialect, aspect is presented in various syntactic forms and consisted of diverse sub-types. This thesis focuses on the source forms of aspect markers, aiming to reveal the semantic relations among different aspect types and the expansion paths of their syntactic functions. Based on the cognitive and typological linguistic theories, we analyze the prototype semantic meaning for each source from as well as how they evolve into aspect markers of different types. The source structures to be discussed in this thesis include verbal reduplication, directional complement and serial verb construction.
