Abstract: This dissertation re-examines the conflicts between practitioners of Western medicine and Chinese medicine, which is the core of modern transformation of medicine in China in the “Nanjing Decade(1927-1937)”from the angle of the province, but not the State. By taking Shanghai as a case, this dissertation reveals the existing answers to the question: why traditional Chinese medicine wasn’t marginalized after the modern Western medicine was introduced and established in China, such as the number of practitioners of Western medicine was small, Chinese people deeply believed in Chinese medicine and practitioners of Western medicine couldn’t use Chinese herbal drugs, are one-sided. This dissertation argues that the trajectory of the making of modern medicine in China not only depended on the interaction between medicine and the State, but also the negotiation of the State and Shanghai which is the center of medicine in the ‘Nanjing Decade” period.
