Abstract: Metal-Organic hybrid materials have been shown to provide interesting properties combining the metal stability and organic functionality. They have wide variety of applications ranging from physical gas storage, catalysis, magnetic response, proton and electron conductivity. In this thesis, the focus is on the photophysical property of this material class. Of which, photoluminescence is considered the basic light emitting process whereby photons are emitted from a medium upon excitation. Simple as it seems, the process can be complicated by solvent effect and in solids, the packing effects. Upconversion fluorescence is an exciting phenomenon as higher energy photon can be obtained by combining lower energy ones. While there are many types of upconversion process that leads to an emission, two-photon absorption process in CPs and MOFs has never been explored. As such, rationales and design principles to make such metal-organic materials are presented together with the basic principles of the experimental techniques used.
