Abstract: A review of 27 cases of glomus tumours of the musculoskeletal system is reported. 74% of all cases occurred in the hand. Among the 20 cases of glomus tumour of the hand, 40% were subungual in location and 75% were found in the distal phalanx. The classical triad of pain, tenderness and cold sensitivity occurred in only 22% of cases. Pain was the single most predominant finding, occurring in 96%. Clinical diagnosis was achieved in 78% of cases. A high index of suspicion is required to avoid undue delay in diagnosis and treatment. Meticulous and complete excision offers the best and only cure. Recurrence of symptoms occurred 2.7 years post surgery in 4 cases. Glomus tumours may pose diagnostic and treatment challenges to the surgeon.
