Abstract: 3D computer graphics, the technology used for special effects in movies and animations, is proposed here as a tool for biologists to represent and study the anatomy, behaviour and evolution of life on earth. I document the power of this approach by creating 3D models of sepsid flies (Sepsidae, Diptera), quantify their morphological shapes, animate processes of morphological diversification and perform virtual experiments to test functional hypotheses.
