Abstract: In various sample preparation methods, solid-phase extraction (SPE) is one of the most popular techniques. It has been in use for many decades and yet is able to meet new challenges, such as minimization solvent and sorbent specifically and improvement in the work flow of laborious operations. Nevertheless, there remain considerable innovations that SPE can offer. This thesis attempts to apply one of these innovations, dissolvable sorbents, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivants (e.g., layered double oxide (LDO), Fe3O4@LDO, Fe3O4@LDH, (EDTA-Ni)-LDH), with different structures and properties, in some special and new SPE modes (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE), co-precipitation extraction, in-syringe DSPE, automated DSPE) to improve the extraction efficiency. The LDHs and their derivants were demonstrated to be efficient sorbents, and they showed good potential to contribute to guide the future development of SPE.
