Abstract: THIS RESEARCH EXAMINES THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN POLITICAL SOCIETY AND CHINESE CIVIL SOCIETY BY USING THE FRAMEWORK OF GRAMSCI?S HEGEMONIC THEORY, IN THE PROCESS OF SINGAPORE NATION-BUILDING. NANYANG UNIVERSITY AND THE RULING PARTY IN SINGAPORE WERE TWO PLAYERS IN THE HISTORY OF LANGUAGE POLITICS IN THIS DISSERTATION. THE CHANGING HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION OF NANYANG UNIVERSITY IS THE MAINLINE OF THIS RESEARCH MOSTLY BASED ON THE STUDIES OF REPORTS OF NANYANG SIANG PAU ON NANYANG UNIVERSITY.
