Abstract: Based on the mode matching method, an accurate analytical model was derived in this paper for artificial surfaces comprising planar periodic conducting strip arrays on top of an anisotropic dielectric/magnetic spacer backed by a conducting ground plane. The model takes into account properly the high order modes between the strips and the ground plane, thus can be applicable for ultrathin spacers. The model reveals the effect of different tensor components of the anisotropic permeability and permittivity. The analytical model was validated through both numerical and experimental results. © 2011 Engineers Australia.
