Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of external heat radiation through windows with different cover conditions, horizontal and vertical blinds, on the vertical temperature profile in a thermal chamber room served by displacement ventilation system. Two sets of 3 × 4 (row by column) spot lamps are used to simulate the solar radiation through windows in this experiment. Different arrangements of cover conditions of the windows were installed in the chamber. A series of experiments were conducted by varying the heat loads, supply air temperature and vertical locations of the external heat sources. It was found that the vertical temperature gradient is significantly dependent on the type of the window covers and the specific heat load. The results show that vertical window blinds are more effective in resisting heat from the outside than horizontal blinds. The findings from this study are very critical for application of DV system in the Tropics.
