Abstract: In this paper we show that efficient multiuser receivers result in a cellular capacity that is many times that of conventional cellular systems. We also show that the joint detection of users in soft handover regions dramatically increases system capacity. Although we require a multiuser receiver that can provide single user performance, we show that there is no gain doing so when the number of users is very large relative to the processing gain of the spreading.
