Abstract: A large-scale postal survey and six in-depth case studies on information architecture practice were carried out from 1992 to 1994 in the UK. The research findings suggest information architecture to be a useful information systems planning tool. The study further redefines information architecture's core components and concludes that the careful targeting and development of these components - business system architecture, application architecture and data architecture - can contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of information systems planning and implementation.
