This article briefly describes this effort and discusses the research agenda of the Institute of Systems Science (ISS) in supporting this national endeavor. First, the IT2000 project is introduced. The motivation for the government and other parties in the development of the National Information Infrastructure (NII) is outlined, with a strategic framework for coordination of the development of different aspects of the NII.
