Abstract: The formation of nanostructures by the activated Stranski-Krastanow (SK) transition method was discussed. The new method was based on the finding that critical thickness for island formation depends on whether the formation was affected by surface undulation or nucleation. The study propose that self assembly of complicated nanocrystals could be realized by making patterns on the surface of the SK system with the film thickness. It was observed that the new method has the potential to control the location, the size and the shapes of the self-assembled nanocrystals.
