ScholarBank@NUS Repository.https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/222735The constantly changing demographics and economic structure result in the need for new buildings. The environmental drawback of demolishing old buildings and constructing new ones, increasing building costs and the effects of buildings’ obsolescence, call for a strategy that can reduce waste and prolong the use of the buildings. Design for disassembly is seen as a more sustainable approach to this issue, since recycling from construction and demolition debris usually results in a degradation of material quality and economic values. One of the main concerns with design for disassembly lies with the ease of assembly and disassembly of building components. This is closely related to the connection design and components sizes, which tend to be limited by the standard indirect interlocking connections and factory sizes available in the industry. The paper will discuss how digital fabrication can contribute to design-for-disassembly with customizable complex connections. Its application on various conventional building materials, like timber, concrete and aluminum, will be reviewed with reference to selected case studies.enArchitectureDesign Technology and SustainabilityShinya Okuda2010/2011 DTSDIGITAL FABRICATION OF INTERLOCKING CONNECTIONS FOR DISASSEMBLY OF COMPONENTSDissertation
