ScholarBank@NUS Repository.https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/170723Dream of the Red Chamber (Hong Lou Meng) is one of China’s “Four Masterpieces of Chinese Novels” and much scholarship has been done on the novel. Since Dream of the Red Chamber is known for its encyclopaedic nature, much of the research done on the novel is on one aspect of knowledge that is displayed in the novel. Dream of the Red Chamber is known for its richness in medical knowledge, displayed by the descriptions of various illnesses and symptoms shown by the characters, and the medical prescriptions given by doctors in the novel. Scholars, whose interest is in the medical aspect of the novel, have mainly studied the novel from a medical theory perspective, while others have studied it from an intertextual perspective, comparing the medical theme in the novel with that of other novels or medical texts. This paper will undertake the study of the representation of illness in Dream of the Red Chamber from a mainly textual analysis perspective and will use medical texts as a supplementary tool of analysis. In the novel, the main female characters become ill at a certain point in the novel. The author explicitly states in the beginning of the novel that the theme of the novel is all about love (dazhi tanqing) and is a written work about females. Therefore, this paper aims to establish the relationship between love (qing) and illnesses of the female characters in the novel, and examines how love (qing) is being expressed in the form of illness based on the differences in anxiety present in love (qing) due to the differences in marital or religious status of the female characters in the novel.zh《红楼梦》女性婚姻状态宗教状态未嫁出嫁出家跨越界限《红楼梦》中的“病”与“情” = THE REPRESENTATION OF BING AND QING IN DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBERThesis
