ScholarBank@NUS Repository.https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/223903There is an increasing use of mobile transportation due to advancement of technology and rising affluent of people especially in developed countries. Though this result in greater convenience to lifestyle, it has brought some adverse impacts to the environment such as emissions of greenhouse gases and depletion of fossil fuels. With global climate issues constantly worsening year after year, it is crucial that intervention be done and the whole dynamics of transport planning has to be relooked at. Other adverse issue such as traffic congestion also undermines our sustainable way of living. Transportation needs to be sustainable to be beneficial to us In the long run. Common policies that are currently in place include switching to use of vehicles with higher occupancy or non vehicular modes and those that promotes fewer trips and shorter trip distances. It becomes evident that maximizing use of public transportation instead of private mobiles is a way to more sustainable living with greater environmental, economical and social benefits. Transit Oriented Development revolves around the concept of planning land use and transportation network with the objective towards the idea of a “livable community” and “smart growth”. This report studies the relationship between public transit network and urban planning with the concept of TOD in mind. I would investigate how movement and urban land use are entwined and how this entwinement brings forth a sustainable living environment.enArchitectureDesign Technology and SustainabilityHee Limin2010/2011 DTSPublic transportUrban cityUrban planningBLOCKS AND FLOW : URBAN PLANNING AND THE USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN URBAN CITIESDissertation
