There is a need to re-study the underlying computer system structure to support the execution of multimedia applications because some general-purpose operating systems (GPOS) like UNIX cannot give sufficient and timely service. There are real-time systems that emphasize on the predictability and guarantee of schedules but these should not be the primary concern of multimedia applications. A flexible scheduling testbed called Interactive exeCUTE (ICute) was designed and implemented to: implement a flexible scheduling mechanism; present the programmer with a suitable environment for developing and executing multimedia applications; and improve portability since ICute is implemented on a UNIX platform.
