Net is a point-to-point arbitrary connected local network that supports random multiple access. This network is characterized by high performance and high availability, and is easy for network reconfiguration. The actual connection pattern of a given ArbNet installation will be determined by physical constraints and reliability requirements. This paper provides an overview of the ArbNet architecture, and presents the results of a simulation study of mesh-like ArbNets. The effect of packet size, transmission rate and network size on network performance is investigated. The status of prototype development is highlighted. © 1990.
