OSI addressing strategies for interconnected LANs

Abstract

This paper discusses the OSI addressing principles and implementation strategies for interconnected heterogeneous local area networks. The addressing capabilities of seven layers are analysed and demonstrated using a general gateway model. The relationship between names and addresses is discussed, based on the new X.500 directory service. To enhance the understanding, the association of N-service primitive and N-protocol address information is illustrated with a typical transmitted frame traversing through protocol layers. © 1990.
