Abstract: The composites with composition (1-x)Bi2Fe4O 9-x:BaO, in which x varied as 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, were prepared by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction showed that the content of Bi 2Fe4O9 decreased with increasing content of BaO, while multiferroic BiFeO3 and ferrimagnetic BaFei 2O19 appeared as the major phases in the composites. The magnetic and ferroelectric behaviors were observed in the composites at room temperature. Variation of dielectric constant (ε) with frequency in the range of 1 - 100 kHz was measured. The maximum value of the magnetodielectric effect ([ε(H)-ε(0)]/ε(0)) in the presence of magnetic field at room temperature was found to be 5% in the composites with x=03, while the applied magnetic field was 7 kOe. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.
