dc.description.abstract | Al-TiB2 metal-matrix composites have been fabricated using an exothermic reaction process at 850°C using K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts. The exothermic reaction period was varied from a minimum of 10 min to a maximum of 40 min to investigate the relationship between the degree of reaction and the growth behaviour of TiB2 and the weight percentage of TiB2 formed. Microstructural observation showed a decreasing trend in grain size of the composites up to a reaction time of 30 min: it was, however, found to increase slightly for a reaction time of 40 min. An X-ray diffractometer was used to confirm the presence of TiB2 as well as to estimate quantitatively the weight percentage of TiB2 particles in the composite for the various reaction holding times. X-ray spectra showed that the amount of TiB2 increased initially when the exothermic reaction period was prolonged. After a reaction holding time of 20 min, the amount of TiB2 started to decrease. Finally, the microstructural results obtained in the present study were rationalized in terms of the processing parameters. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. | |
