The He I and He II photoelectron spectra of 2(3H)-furanone and 5-methyl-2(3H)-furanone have been recorded. They show a third band not reported earlier. The first three bands in the spectrum of 2(3H)-furanone at 9.76, 10.65 and 12.83 eV are assigned to ionizations from the πC=C-O-*, nO(C=O), and π-O-C=O* orbitals, respectively. Correlation with orbitals in ethene and acetic acid reveals significant π-conjugation in the furanones. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
