Vacuum technology is used in petroleum refineries to facilitate the distillation of heavy ends at low temperatures, to prevent coking and degradation of products and for other applications. A discussion on various methods for developing energy-efficiency vacuum generation systems in petroleum refineries covers studies to enhance understanding in the selection process; design principles and utility requirements; design strategy for a new vacuum system; optimization of vacuum system operating cost; equipment costs; and analysis of results.
