Abstract: Laser reactive sintering is one of the rapid prototyping approaches for forming alloys, cermets and composites with certain shapes. This paper reports the Ti/TiN in-situ composite formed by laser induced reaction between Ti powder and N2 gas. The existence of TiN was found by using XRD and TEM. The TEM results also revealed that most of the original Ti was remained and acting as a matrix. The effects of the percentage of N2 and the scan spacing to the amounts of TiN phase in the composite were investigated. SEM pictures of the formed composite samples were taken and the microstructures of the composite were analysed. The mechanical properties of the composite samples due to the various process parameters were also measured and analysed.
