Urban environments are dynamic in nature and concentration times of such catchments tend to be extremely short, making the operational management of these reservoirs challenging. The best alternatives that can be adopted to deal with these extreme hydrological features were investigated, including a quantitative assessment of the role of the hydro-meteorological information available in real-time. Furthermore an off-line procedure is adopted to integrate water quality objectives into the developed control procedure. The challenging hydrological pattern in urban environments can be mitigated by the adoption of water-sensitive urban design infrastructures. Green roofs, for example, reduce the amount of impervious areas, enhancing the retention capabilities and providing additional storm water storage. In this work, we adopt a numerical modelling framework to quantitatively evaluate the effect of green roofs deployment at the catchment level.
