Abstract: Magnesium based nanocomposite containing tin oxide as reinforcement was successfully synthesized using powder metallurgy technique incorporating microwave assisted two-directional sintering. The sintered specimens were hot extruded and characterized in terms of their microstructural and tensile properties. The results revealed a marked effect of reinforcement in nano length scale on the 0.2% yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and ductility (improvement of -12% over monolithic Mg) of magnesium. An attempt is made in the present study to interrelate the tensile behavior of Mg with the presence of nano-size reinforcement.
