This paper emphasises on the voltage support aspects of reactive power compensation for power transmission system using high voltage underground cables. The design, implementation and test results of a laboratory scale dynamic model of a rapidly controllable shunt reactive compensator is described. A PC based split inductor type controller is used to increase the flexibility of the system. Results of various tests show the effect of the SVC controller on the system transient as well as steady state performances. It has been found that the proposed design is economical, provides fast response, has smaller reactor losses and lower harmonic generation, and maintains an acceptable voltage profile over a wide range of operating conditions.
