Abstract: A hierarchical packet-switched local subscriber loop for the broadband ISDN is proposed. The structure of the network consists of medium-speed copper-based access networks feeding a high-speed optical fiber backbone network. The interface to the ISDN exchange is via multiple PCM30 links. An experimental prototype system consisting of five backbone nodes and two independent access networks is to be constructed. Initially, the backbone network will be based on the FDDI standard and the access networks on the IEEE 802. 4 token bus standard. The performance of the initial system will be evaluated for ISDN applications.
