Abstract: Mobile collaborative augmented reality (AR) technology demonstrates great potential for augmenting learning experience in collaboration. The convergence of AR, collaboration and handheld devices opens up more opportunities for strengthening the effectiveness of social interaction in collaborative learning. We conceptualize it as a new form of collaborative learning, collaborative AR social learning. Based on the reflections of the sociality characteristics of mobile collaborative AR, we develop a model for better understanding this emerging instructional medium. It has implications for the development of mobile collaborative AR applications for educational purposes in the future. © 2011 IEEE.
