In order to investigate the prospect of tilted perpendicular media as an alternative to the current longitudinal media, comprehensive simulation of its recording performance is essential. In this paper, we investigate the influence of intergranular exchange coupling in a tilted perpendicular media recording system on its recording properties, such as coercivity, transition parameter a, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A comparison of these parameters is made between tilted and perpendicular media. Significantly better performance is observed of tilted perpendicular media in terms of transition sharpness (50%-100% improvement) and SNR (up to 5 dB). © 2005 IEEE.
