Cognitive networks will employ cross-layer design and optimization techniques. In this chapter, Vineet Srivastava and Mehul Motani offer a detailed treatment of cross-layer design and optimization as applied to wireless networks. They taxonomize the different cross-layer design proposals according to the kind of architecture violations they represent, and describe some cross-layer design ideas that have made their way into commercial products and industry standards. There is no doubt that cross-layer design holds tremendous potential in wireless communications, but they argue that in order for that potential to be fulfilled, it is imperative to view cross-layer design holistically by considering both performance and architectural viewpoints. © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
