Optical methods are advantageous in monitoring the shift in buildings. In this work, the speckle correlation encoder is investigated for this purpose. The effect of decorrelation due to lateral motion in limiting the accuracy of speckle correlation encoders is discussed and verified in this work. A method of neighbourhood addressing using a two-dimensional array detector is proposed and shown to overcome this limitation. Experimental results verify the feasibility of using this approach for building shift monitoring.
