dc.description.abstract | This review describes the transport properties of liquid membranes with fatty acids as mobile carriers of ions. It is demonstrated that fatty acids induce coupled counter transport of alkali metal cations and protons. This electrically neutral process has a stoichiometry 1:1. Competing with this process is the generation of an electrical transmembrane potential. A theoretical description of transmembrane ion transport from one aqueous solution into another through an organic liquid membrane is presented. The model assumes that transport is facilitated by a low molecular weight acid carrier which is distributed in both the aqueous and membrane phases. Ion-exchange reactions are taking place simultaneously with diffusion in the aqueous solutions and can be the rate limiting steps for the transport process. An analytical expression describing the rate of transmembrane transport in this multi step process is presented. The experimental rate of metal ion transport by fatty acids is analyzed in terms of the theory. All parameters that are necessary to describe the kinetics, including ion- exchangerate constants, diffusion coefficients in all phases, and the thickness of reaction layers in both aqueous solutions, are determined. | |
