Simultaneous chemical copolymerization and oxidation of pyrrole (PY) and bithiophene (BT) and of aniline (AN) and BT by copper perchlorate have been carried out. The copolymer compositions in each case can be effectively controlled by varying the monomer feed ratios. The copolymer compositions, the charge transfer interactions in the copolymer complexes, and the intrinsic redox states of the corresponding copoylmer bases have been conveniently determined by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) technique. As far as the intrinsic redox states and the charge transfer interactions are concerned, the PY, AN and BT units in the respective copolymer systems behave similarly as in their respective homopolymer complexes. However, copolymerization results in a substantial reduction in the electrical conductivity of the complexes, probably as a result of interruption of the polaron lattice by the presence of a second monomer. © 1992.
