dc.description.abstract | Since the 1970's modification of the activated sludge process, the sequencing batch reactor (SBR), has made its appearance. The SBR, unlike its predecessors is a batch process. Although it has as yet gained neither common recognition nor the widespread acceptance of other types of aerobic processes, it has nevertheless made inroads into effluent treatment practice. The SBR has performed well in areas where it has been applied. The SBR is a relatively 'new' process and the body of literature concerning its design, operation, performance and costs is neither as extensive nor as readily available as that for many other biological treatment processes. The purpose of this review is to introduce and describe the SBR, present a simplified design approach and provide a summary of its application and performance in the field of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. | |
