Developing countries are faced with the acute problem of having cheap but durable materials for the housing construction of the low-income families. Use of natural fiber-reinforced concrete materials may provide a solution to some extent to this problem of low-cost housing. Natural fibers exist abundantly in many countries and, if properly used as reinforcement in concrete, can present a major breakthrough in the low-cost housing construction. This paper presents strength properties, physical performance, and durability of various natural fiber reinforced concrete building products. It also highlights the commercial prospects of this new distinct group of building materials for low-cost housing construction.
