A simple finite element method is presented for the axisymmetric free vibration analysis of cylindrical shell structures with uniform or varying wall thickness. The method is based on the analogy with a beam on elastic foundation, where the foundation modulus and beam flexural rigidity are replaced by appropriate parameters pertaining to the shell under consideration. The technique is attractive for implementation on a microcomputer and with few elements it gives results which compare well with other solutions. © 1992.
