Abstract: The finite strip method is presented for the analysis of coupled frame-shear wall buildings subjected to lateral loads. Appropriate displacement functions of admissible class are adopted such that the problem is uncoupled and can be conveniently solved term by term. Although this uncoupling property is valid only when the building is uniform throughout its height, the method is extended to buildings with nonuniform section by employing the concept of equivalent uniform section. Several numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy and validity of the proposed scheme. The method provides reasonably accurate results, requires a small core storage and short computing time and is suitable for implementation on any of the personal computers which are commonly available in most engineering design offices. © 1988.
