Abstract: Explicit formulas to predict the characteristics of a symmetrical five-port microstrip ring coupler are obtained from a first-order eigenmode analysis. Tests on a prototype coupler over the 2-4-GHz bandwidth indicate that the agreement between theory and experiment is reasonably good.
