Abstract: A damage model for brittle materials under dynamic loading is presented. The nucleation, growth, coalescence and fragmentation of microcracks are considered. The influence of inertial effects on dynamic growth of microcracks, which is a major characteristic of dynamic loading, is taken into account. The critical condition for microcrack dynamic growth is obtained. In addition, microcrack interaction is accounted for implicitly in the model. © 1995.
