Abstract: Hypereutectic cast iron specimens cast using chills that were water-cooled and liquid-nitrogen-cooled were compared with specimens of the same chemical composition which were sand cast without any chill. The solidification behaviour, number of eutectic cells, grain size and the effects of these on the mechanical properties like strength and fracture toughness were recorded and analysed in this paper. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
