Abstract: A set of orthogonal plate functions generated by using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonality relationship is used to approximate accurately the mode shapes of point supported rectangular plates. This approach can be applied to study arbitrarily distributed elastic point supported rectangular plates having any prescribed classical boundary conditions. To demonstrate the accuracy and the versatility of the present method, several examples are solved. The effects of spring constants on the vibrational responses of these plates are presented. For several cases, results for plates with rigid point supports, where possible, are compared with other available values in the literature. © 1994 Academic Press. All rights reserved.
