Abstract: Nanosensors are gaining increasing attention due to the need to detect and measure chemical and physical properties in difficult to reach biological and industrial systems that are in the nano-scale region. This conceptual review surveys various nanosensors, which are categorized into three broad types: optical, electromagnetic and mechanical nanosensors. The sensing concepts and their corresponding advantages are discussed with reference to their applications. © 2006 Verlag der Zeitschrift für Naturforschung.
