dc.description.abstract | Aggregation of noble metal nanoparticles can induce significant enhancement of two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL). Utilizing near-infrared light as the excitation source, two-photon excitation possesses advantages over one-photon excitation, including high penetration depth, localized excitation, and reduced photo-damage. This thesis presents aggregation enhanced TPPL and their applications. We first investigated the aggregation effects on TPPL and two-photon induced singlet oxygen generation (TP-1O2) of Au nanospheres and Au nanorods. Aggregated Au nanospheres and short Au nanorods displayed enhanced TPPL and TP-1O2, while aggregated long Au NRs exhibited lower results. Next, we developed TPPL sensing platforms for detection of dopamine, Hg2+ and thrombin. A simple and fast TPPL method was used to detect dopamine by using Au NPs. Hg2+ was detected by using cysteine functionalized Ag NPs. Thrombin was detected by using Ag NPs and thrombin-binding aptamer with detection limit of 3.1 pM, which method can be performed in fetal bovine serum. | |
